  • Create: ZIP, 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.XZ and TAR.BZ2, with a selectable compression level.
  • Extract: all of the above plus RAR / RAR5 and other common formats, in full or by selected entries.
  • Passwords: create and open AES-encrypted ZIP and 7z archives.
  • RAR creation is intentionally omitted (the format is proprietary; RAR is extract-only). Damaged or uncommon archives may still need manual checking — keep the original file before extracting.

How ZipSmith works

ZipSmith uses a local archive engine (libarchive) to list, create, and extract files you select in the app or Finder. Everything runs on your Mac.

Formats it creates and extracts

Creates ZIP, 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.XZ and TAR.BZ2. Extracts all of those plus RAR / RAR5 and other common formats, in full or by selected entries. Creates and opens AES-encrypted ZIP and 7z archives.

What the app does not promise

RAR creation is intentionally omitted because the format is proprietary. The app does not promise recovery of every damaged, encrypted, or uncommon archive, and does not use private macOS APIs.
